Lorenzo Maitani and Associates, Jesus' Entry into Jerusalem

Circa 1310-31
Relief in stone
West façade, Orvieto Cathedral, Italy

A barefoot Jesus blesses the throng gathered to welcome him. The man behind is probably one of the disciples. In the crowd, the man in front is laying a garment on the path before the ass. Behind him, the man on the left is waving a branch of olives. That compresses two details from the narratives: In the synoptic gospels, people cut branches from trees in the Mount of Olives and place them on the path; in John, the crowd welcomes Jesus by waving palm branches.
